Chain Saw Art

Ikala Nawan Whispering Giant,
details: approx. H. 18 ft. x W. 9 ft.; Base: approx. H. 5 ft. x Diam. 15 ft. and honors Clatsop Chinook, and all Northwest coastal Native Americans.

The Whispering Giant, is located near the round-about, Young's Bay Bridge, Astoria, Oregon. It was not created by a local artist. It is one of several created by Peter Wolf Toth, a Hungarian-born sculptor, who settled in Akron, Ohio. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Wolf_Toth
See pics of Astoria Whispering Giant and others in the series.

There are local chain saw sculpture makers. I was driving near Saddle Mt. and came to a view of acres of clear-cut. At the top of the rise was a stump sculpted into a beaver. The wooden beaver was gazing out over the clear-cut with a most satisfied expression. It was one of the best art works I have ever seen. I cannot give you directions to see it for I was lost when I saw it.

Royal Nebeker

Royal Nebeker lives and has lived on the north coast of Oregon for many year.

For details about Royal Nebeker and his art google search "royal nebeker artist"

His art studio, "Big Red," a historic building that symbolized the strength of local fisherman, was partially destroyed in the Dec. 2009 storm. Efforts continue to help Royal restore the building, by members of the community.

As an adult she traveled the USA and lived in North Carolina for 17 years. She moved to Seaside upon her return to Oregon in 1985, eventually constructing a dance studio where her grandparents old shack once stood. Blind Pilot

Lead guitar and vocalist of Blind Pilot grew up on Oregon's north coast as did their upright bass player. "Blind Pilot began in 2007 when Israel Nebeker (vocals, guitar) and Ryan Dobrowski (drums) embarked on a West Coast bicycle tour playing mostly to unfamiliar listeners at small-town venues. The band now exists as a 6-piece ensemble featuring fellow Oregonians Luke Ydstie (upright bass, backing vocals), Kati Claborn (banjo, dulcimer, backing vocals), Ian Krist (vibraphones) and Dave Jorgensen (keyboards, trumpet). In the years since it’s inception, the band has toured with various world-renowned musicians and have appeared at the Sasquatch! Music Festival, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival." http://www.myspace.com/blindpilot

The Wondering Bard

The Wondering Bard grew up in Seaside Oregon. This gifted guitar player and composer has the uncanny knack of watching a video and creating music that matches it - an ability rare in the musician community. His style ranges from country to rock to ballad to new age classical. Some of his work sounds like Spanish flamenco music though he began composing in this style long before he ever encountered Spanish music or set foot in Spain.

He gave himself the stage name, The Wondering Bard, in tribute to his hereditary itchy foot. He's off wandering as he wonders. Since leaving Seaside, his feet have taken him, his guitar, camera, backpack (often in excess of 80 lbs) to Europe, Italy, Bulgaria, Brazil, to name a few. He often summers in Alaska and winters in Portland Oregon, with an occasional visit to the great north coast of Oregon.

The Wondering Bard's words and some of his photos taken 2008 - 2009 in Oregon and Texas are captured in "Bend Your Words and Fold Your Ears." This booklet also contains photos, art and layout by Lyndsey Denyer who lives and works in Portland Oregon.
